After her runaway success on the ramp, Deepika Padukone’s entry into Bollywood came like a whiff of fresh air. After her debut in Om Shanti Om, critics said she was the next big thing. And she proved them right, juggling serious and comic roles with élan in films like Love Aaj Kal, Karthik Calling Karthik, Housefull and now, her latest outing Lafange Parindey. The lissome lass tells us how feeling beautiful from the inside helps her take on the world with greater confidence.
You combine grace, beauty and confidence superbly. What does being beautiful mean to you?
Actually no matter how pat it sounds, the saying beauty is in the eye of the beholder is true, you know. But, beauty is not just about looks. It lies within and discovering it is a journey for which you need to delve into yourself. I wake up every morning to soak in the life I’ve been gifted by the Almighty. This makes me feel beautiful and, in turn, gives me the confi-dence to do things well.
But there must also be a beauty mantra you swear by?
Looking good all the time is not easy. It requires discipline and dedication and a strong belief in yourself. Incorporating simple things in your day-to-day routine can make a huge difference. For instance, I always keep some time of the day aside, entirely for myself. This apart, getting adequate sleep every night also works wonders. It’s also important that you take on some form of physical activity-be it running, walking or yoga-something that you can continue to do for the rest of your life, without exerting yourself.
So, how much of a role does keeping fit play in the way you look?
I come from a family where fitness has been a way of life and I learnt very early on that it is key to good health. Also, since I’ve been playing badminton from a very young age, I’ve always had an athletic body. The way I train may have changed over the years, but I’m still very big on fitness and work out first thing in the morning. Back then, as a sportsperson, I would run a lot to build stamina, do cardio, but that is no longer the case. Since I travel frequently, it becomes difficult for me to have a daily workout routine. But whenever I hit the gym, I do a combination of cardio training and some light weights.
When I’m unable to do so, I combine yoga and easy stretches, and occasionally go for evening walks. And of course, I’m pretty careful about what I eat.
How important is a healthy diet for staying beautiful?
A healthy diet is the first step towards a healthy and fit body. I take a balanced diet of good carbs, good fats and proteins. I have three main meals in a day, breakfast being the most important one. But I try to eat smart. For instance, if I’m having a dosa, I have it minus the potato filling; if I’m eating eggs, I take only the white portion and if it’s idlis, I substitute the coconut chutney with a pudina one. During shoots I eat regular homemade food with dal, two rotis, subzi, raita and salad.
However, that doesn’t mean I don’t leave room for my cravings once in a while. The key is not to deprive yourself, but lead a regimented life to stay beautiful.
With the kind of hectic schedule you keep, how do you ensure a daily beauty regimen?
Time is a constraint, but taking care is a must, I keep it simple and effective. For instance, I follow a simple 10-minute cleansing-toning-moisturising routine before going to bed. Also, when I’m not shooting, I just stick to basics like a simple lipstick and a neutral foundation. However, once in a while I simply love pampering myself with a deep tissue or a pressure point massage as it leaves me feeling fresh and recharged.
Deepika’s Top Make-Up Tricks

Trick: After applying foundation on your face, blend it outwards.
Concealer: Choose one that closely matches your skin tone.
Trick: Apply before foundation on problem areas. Blend well.

Trick: Apply with a sponge applicator to make it last longer.
Eye shadow: Pick colours such as lavender and violet for the eyes.

Mascara: Check if the product is lab-tested (by ophthalmologists/dermatologists/and for allergy) and is safe for sensitive eyes.
