Scientists believe a key compound known as frondoside A to be responsible. Frondoside A is a triterpenoid, diverse organic compounds found in the essential oils and oleoresins of plants.
This latest study, published in PLoS One, has confirmed just how powerful frondoside A truly is.
Researchers found it to kill 95% of ER+ breast cancer cells, 95% of liver cancer cells, 90% of melanoma cells, and 85-88% of three different types of lung cancer.
As Evers reports:
“But the benefits of this compound don’t just stop at directly inducing programmed cell death (apoptosis). It also inhibits angiogenesis (the ability of tumors to grow new blood vessels to get their food) and stops cancer metastasizing by impeding cell migration and invasion. Even more intriguing is the ability of frondoside A to activate our immune system’s natural killer cells to attack cancer cells.
This has been shown for breast cancer in particular but may also apply to all cancers, because it involves the immune system and not cancer cells directly. This may partially explain why frondoside A was so effective at shrinking lung tumors in mice that it rivaled chemo drugs in performance.”
When given to mice with non-small cell lung cancer, frondoside A was found to shrink tumors by 40% in only 10 days. Traditional chemo drugs shrunk the tumors by 47 percent, but the risks of chemo treatment are far greater than any side-effects or risks of sea cucumber. (Namely because there are no known risks associated with sea cucumbers). In addition, the amount of frondoside A needed to achieve such results was miniscule—less than a single milligram for an adult weighing 165 pounds.
“Journal of Neuroendocrine Tumours and Pancreatic Diseases and Sciences” states that “extracts from an edible, non-toxic sea cucumber effectively caused cell damage and cell death in human pancreatic cancer cells”. The results of this study are encouraging for the potential use of sea cucumber extract as a dietary supplement which may be used in the treatment or prevention of pancreatic cancer. There is a strong negative correlation between greenhouse gases and air quality. As greenhouse gases increase, smog levels increase. People with asthma and other ongoing lung problems are especially at risk from rising ground-level ozone. Also of concern is something called particulate air pollution. This results in particulate matter (a mix of very small drops of liquid with small particles), which when breathed in can deeply penetrate the lungs.

Similarly, a general rise in average temperatures doesn’t bode well for a number of segments of the population. The elderly, people with heart problems, asthmatics, young children and those living on the streets are especially exposed and vulnerable to increased heat, which is seen when greenhouse gases increase.

In 2008, a scientist from Stanford used computer modeling and the latest and greatest in environmental process data to draw a direct correlation between increased atmospheric carbon dioxide and human mortality. The study contended that for each increase of 1 degree Celsius that’s caused by carbon dioxide emissions, about a thousand deaths would result each year in the United States and about 20,000 deaths globally. It would also result in a great increase in the number of incidences of asthma and other respiratory ailments .

Work related asthma is common in industries setting. Existing hypersensitive airway in employees should be noted prior to employment. Workplace asthma is a very crucial occupational disease that draws lots of attention among employers and staff and steps taken for prevention and early detection.

Introduction
Occupational asthma is work related type of respiratory disorder. It is characterized by the reversible, intermittent and recurrent breathing difficulty including tightness of the chest, coughing, shortness of breath as well as wheezing as a result of exposure to some agents at work place.
Occupational asthma is the most prevalent occupational lung disease in developed country. It is estimated that up to 15% of asthmatic cases reported in US are occupational related. Many are not aware that certain agents at work place could lead to hyper-responsiveness of airway or aggravating the pre-exisiting asthmatic symptoms. In view of that, it is quite likely that the cases of occupational related asthma are under reported.

Diagnosing Occupational Asthma
While the clinical presentations of asthma are similar to non occupational asthma such as coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath, it is crucial to have a detailed occupational history when one is suspected to have occupational asthma. Specific questions must be asked on type of work/ industry involved, frequency of asthma attack, the onset of the asthmatic symptoms in relation to work, possible exposure for asthma causing agents, provision and correct usage of personal protective equipment at work place, duration of work, previous asthma episodes prior to current work and severity of asthma during holiday or seasonal change.

Classical case of work related asthma would be symptoms free during weekends or vacation and recurrence of symptoms on returning to work. Besides that, it is likely to have more severe asthmatic symptoms at the end of the week as compared to the beginning of the week. Such symptoms could be clearly work related in workers who have no known asthma prior to the current employment.

A good clinical history would help in identifying the possibility of work related asthma. Another important criteria is to identify the known asthma-causing agents at work place. Occupational physician would carry out a walk through survey in the work place to identify the possible agents that cause asthmatic attack. A look at the list of chemicals in Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) would give a clue to that.

Asthma Inducing Agents at the Workplace
Asthma inducing agents can be of 2 types: agents with sensitisation (immunological) or without sensitisation (non immunological). Organophosphate pesticides used in agricultural is one of the common asthma inducing agents without sensitisation. Textile workers are also at risk of exposure to cotton dust while workers in paper manufacturing are exposed to chemicals like acids, ammonia and chlorine which are known to trigger asthmatic attack.

Asthma inducing agents with sensitisation involve the immune response which may be antibody-mediated (IgE) or cell-mediated which would sensitizes the person such a way that subsequent exposure to the same antigen elicits an allergic response. Among the common agents that stimulate the immunological response are animal and plant proteins (bakeries and food processing industries), antibiotics (pharmaceutical manufacturing and packaging) as well as chemicals like diisocyanates, acid anhydrides ( plastics and paints manufacturing).

Conclusion
However, not all individuals exposed to these conditions will develop asthma given the different level of susceptibility to asthma than others. Risk factors for occupational asthma include frequent exposure to the agents, allergies, family history of allergies or asthma and smoking.

Once diagnosis is made, asthma must be treated well to avoid the airways developing a pattern of overreacting.

Prevention of COUGH

Acute coughs usually begin suddenly and are often due to a cold, flu, or sinus infection.

1) Take ‘benzydamine hydrochloride’ spray on the prevention of a sore throat.

2) Quit smoking or don’t smoke in the first place.

3) Stay away from secondhand cigarette smoke and airborne irritants.

4)You can take these herbs such as sundew,echinacea,  and coltsfoot. Licorice,to relieve respiratory ailments from allergies, bronchitis, colds, and sore throats.Jamaica dogwood is a potent herb and should be used only under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional.

5) Take marshmallow.

6)Cough lozenges or hard candy can help dry, tickling coughs. These should never be given to a child under 3 years old.

7)Inhaled anticholinergic agent (ipratropium bromide) are used to relax your airways and improve your breathing if your cough is related to asthma, bronchitis, or emphysema.

8)Eucalyptus oil acts loosens phlegm in the respiratory.It can be found in many lozenges, cough syrups, and vapor baths.

15)Thyme Tea. Make a tea using two tablespoons of fresh (one tablespoon of dried) thyme in a cup of boiling water; steep, covered, for four minutes; strain and drink hot.

16)Onion juice. Make a syrup by combining 1 teaspoonful of raw onion juice with 1 teaspoonful of honey.

17)Aloe vera juice. Mix equal parts of aloe vera juice and honey and take a tablespoon a day or needed.

18)Add a few drops of eucalyptus to a carrier oil and rub on your chest.

19)Peppermint.Add 10-15 drops to a pot of steaming water and inhale the vapors.

20)Honey drink.Add a tablespoon of honey to a glass of boiling water and drink as needed.

21)For a child, mix of tulsi,ginger,honey in form of paste or just with her warm milk.

22)Basil drink.Water boiled with basil leaves.

23)Ginger Tea. Mixed sliced thin or grated ginger, fresh lemon(sliced),mashed garlic,water and generous spoonful of honey. Place water, ginger, lemon, & garlic in saucepan; bring to boil, then turn down heat and simmer gently for 20 min. Add lots of honey.
