Is it safe to fly during pregnancy?

Is it safe to fly during pregnancy?

Answers from Roger W. Harms, M.D.

Generally, commercial air travel during pregnancy is considered safe for women who have healthy pregnancies. Still, if you’re pregnant, it’s best to check with your health care provider before you fly.

Your health care provider might caution against air travel if your pregnancy is considered high risk or you’re at risk of preterm labor. Similarly, your health care provider might restrict travel of any type after 36 weeks of pregnancy.

If your health care provider approves air travel and you have flexibility in your travel plans, the best time to fly might be in the middle of your pregnancy — about weeks 14 to 28. This is when you’re likely to feel your best, and the risks of miscarriage and premature labor are the lowest.

When you fly:

  • Check the airline’s policy about air travel during pregnancy. Guidelines for pregnant women might vary by carrier and destination.
  • Choose your seat carefully. For the most space and comfort, consider requesting an aisle seat.
  • Buckle up. During the trip, fasten the lap belt under your abdomen.
  • Promote circulation. If possible, take occasional walks up and down the aisle. If you must remain seated, flex and extend your ankles often.
  • Drink plenty of fluids. Low humidity in the cabin can lead to dehydration.

Decreased air pressure during flight can slightly reduce the amount of oxygen in your blood, but this doesn’t pose risks if you’re otherwise healthy.

Likewise, the radiation exposure associated with air travel at high altitudes isn’t thought to be problematic for most business or leisure travelers who fly during pregnancy.

There’s a caveat for frequent fliers, though.

Pilots, flight attendants and others who fly steadily might be exposed to a level of cosmic radiation that raises questions during pregnancy. If you must fly frequently during your pregnancy, discuss it with your health care provider. He or she might limit your total flight time during pregnancy.

Cloth Pads VS Sanitary Napkins

Cloth Pads VS Sanitary Napkins

This post discusses the use of sanitary napkins. Please do not find it offensive. It is only directed towards creating awareness. A sanitary napkin is an absorbent fabric worn by a woman while she is menstruating. A cloth menstrual pad is sanitary napkin that is reusable.

I was approached by Tiny Tapir to test using their cloth menstrual pads last week. In return, I will run a giveaway contest in this blog, promoting the use of reusable cloth menstrual pads. I would like to help, but how could I?

Me got 100% man‘hood’, me no using maxi pad.

At least I came to know the existence of cloth menstrual pads. And I could still help to create awareness here.

In early days before the birth of disposable pads, women used some form of cloth to catch their menstrual blood. Some of these clothes were washable and reusable. In some rural areas and poor families, women did not use anything to collect menstrual blood. When they menstruated, they left a trail of blood behind them (source from the Museum of Menstruation and Women’s Health).

Disposable menstrual pads were first commercially available around 1888. Back then, they were called Southall’s Pads, which was a wood pulp bandages used to catch menstrual blood and can be thrown away after use. These pads have up to 2 centimeters in thickness and leaks were a major problem.

The design has been bettered in the last 20 years by adding “wings” and reducing the thickness of the pad.

Introducing here the cloth menstrual pads. Have you ever heard of this one before? Do not get mistaken, these are not the same cloth pads used 2 generations ago. Modern cloth pads have “wings” too and they are so slim you will not realize you are wearing anything.

Do you know it takes 500 to 800 years for disposable sanitary napkins to biodegrade? Cloth pads are made of 100% organic materials and thus more environmental friendly than disposable sanitary napkins.

Other advantages of cloth menstrual pad over disposable sanitary napkin are:

1. It is less expensive in long run because it will last for years.

2. It carries fewer odors as it is made of more breathable material (cloth) if compared to plastic.

3. It is more comfortable to wear if compared to plastic.Have I managed to pursuit you to switch to cloth menstrual pads?

Sensitive girls ‘have better sex’

Sensitive girls ‘have better sex’

12/05/2009

Women who are in touch with their feelings have more fun in bed, research suggests.

A study of 2,035 female twins showed those with greater emotional intelligence had more and better orgasms.

Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to monitor and manage feelings and emotions in oneself and others.

The findings suggest that having low EI puts woman at risk of female orgasmic disorder, one of the most common sexual problems suffered by women. Up to 30 per cent of women find it difficult or impossible to climax.

Prof Tim Spector, director of the Twin Research Department at King’s College London and co-author of the study, said: “This study will help enormously in the development of behavioural and cognitive therapies to improve women’s sex lives.”
