What is Buah DABAI?

Dabai is one of many exotic fruits in Sarawak or commonly known as ‘Black Olive’ (Or Kana in Hokkien). Then again, it is not an olive.

 

So what is it anyway?

The Buah Dabai scientific name is Canarium, consists of 75 types of species from tropical and subtropical areas. Surprisingly, the Canarium family tree is under the Burseraceae, which is a native to the tropical Africa, southern Asia, and Australia, as well as places like Nigeria-east to Madagascar, India, Southern China, Indonesia and the Philippines.

The fruit itself is so large and grows on thick green trees up to 40-50 meters height, with alternate, pinnate leaves.

Its furry leaves are thin and twigs covered with golden brown.

How do I prepare?

Buah Dabai is another well-known dish among Malaysians. Its preparation will take a minute or two.

Step one, all what you need is to fill it up with water. Not too much hot water of course. The level of water must be slightly less than the amount of Dabai inside it. Cover the container lid so that heat will be trap inside.

Then you just have to fill it up with black soy sauce. At the same time, you can choose to make it salty or sweet. Just add salt for salty and sugar to make it sweet.

The final step is to wait. After two minutes have passed, you may open it. The smell of Dabai aroma is so strong that you will find it hard to resist. Then again, the very fragrant of Dabai depends on your preparation, either sweet or salty.

If you are creative enough, you might want to try different style. Another method of preparing it is by cooking it with our very well-known elegant yet simplest traditional dish. That is the Nasi Goreng (Fried Rice).

Malaysia is very well-known for the Traditional Nasi-Goreng. Be it Chinese style, Malay Style, Indian Style, Tribal Style and even the Free Style! The dish is so simple and flexible that it has no specific methods of preparing it.

All what you need to do is, while cooking your fried rice, as usual, boil your Dabai first and peel off its outer layer. Then dunk everything inside your fried rice but not the seed. Now, your fried rice is known as Nasi Goreng Dabai.

The seed itself however, is eatable. You will have to cut it into half and dig out the flesh inside it using tooth pick. The Dabai inner seed flesh contains lots of calcium which is good for health!

Where to buy?

Dabai, just like the Durian, is a not your typical seasonal fruit. You will only get it once a year.

The price of Dabai ranges differently in kilograms and depends on the seller.

Normally, the best quality Dabai comes from places in Sarawak such as Sibu, Betong, Kanowit, Sarikei, Oya and Kapit. The freshness of Dabai depends on the how the packaging is done. If you are a far traveller, and you want to try out the Dabai by bringing it back home, you need to pack it properly and make sure that it is not exposed to heat. If you do, the Dabai will eventually cook.

It is a very sensitive fruit even with very little heat exposure, the fruits will be cook! So do pack and wrap it well.

Why is there a yellow and red flesh Dabai?

There is no need to fret on the colour. If it is yellow, the flesh is usually thicker than the red ones

Ka Lang(Olive 橄榄), Buah Dabai

This fruit(or vegetable?) is very common in Sibu or the Sarawak and if you go to central market, you will definitely find stalls selling it. We call it Ka Lang(In Foochow), in Malay it is known as Buah Dabai(Video), if I translate from Foochow to Chinese,it is  橄榄 and again if I translate to English, it is Olive. This is definitely not the one that make the olive oil that you can buy in the market. The taste is totally different from normal Olive and Sarawak Olive. It can be found along the riverbanks in Sibu, Kapit and Sarikei divisions.

Research by ARC, Semongok have shown that dabai fruit is nutritious with high values of energy (339kcal), protein (3.8%), fat (26.2%), fiber, and minerals such as potassium (810mg), calcium (200mg), magnesium (106mg) and vitamin E (257ppm) as compared to other underutilized fruit. Current studies by UPM, Serdang have revealed that the main fatty acid composition of dabai – palmitic acid (37-39%), Oleic acid (38-42%) and Linoleic acid (15-18%) is very similar to that of palm oil. Furthermore, these studies also revealed that fruit possesses high antioxidant properties with the skin exhibiting the greatest concentration. The high antioxidant capacity of dabai fruit is due to its polyphenol components. The phenolic compounds in it include anthocyanins, flavonoids and phenolic acids. Dabai fruit contained 2.05-2.49mg anthocyanin/g dried weight as compared to grape of 0.75-0.80mg. Dabai may be a promising source of natural antioxidant phenolics for nutraceutical and functional food industry.

(CNN) — China has halted imports of some New Zealand milk powders after a company disclosed that three batches of an ingredient used in sports drinks and baby formula tested positive for a strain of bacteria that causes botulism.

The New Zealand-based Fonterra Group said Saturday that three batches of its whey protein tested positive for the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Those batches weren’t for use in Fonterra-branded products, but they said companies that used the whey protein in their products might issue recalls.

Fonterra, the world’s largest dairy exporter, said it had warned companies that bought the whey protein about the problem. “As a result, these customers are urgently investigating whether any of the affected product, which contains a strain of Clostridium, is in their supply chains,” the company said.

Three of those clients have told Fonterra that their products are safe.

“Our technical teams have been working closely this weekend with Coca-Cola, Wahaha and Vitaco and have established that the process used to manufacture their products would kill the bacteria that was in the affected whey protein concentrate,” Gary Romano, Fonterra’s managing director of NZ Milk Products.

But China — where at least six babies died from tainted milk powder in 2008 — has halted all imports of New Zealand milk powders from New Zealand and Australia, New Zealand’s Trade Minister Tim Groser said in an interview on television network TVNZ on Sunday.

But in an update on its website, the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries clarified that Chinese authorities had suspended imports of Fonterra-produced Whey Powder and Dairy Base powder, while also increasing inspection and supervision of New Zealand dairy products.

“China has not closed the market to all New Zealand dairy products,” the ministry said. “And it has also been quite specific about the range of Fonterra products which it has temporarily suspended.”

Dairy is a key industry in New Zealand, making up about 3% of its GDP.

The Trade Ministry said Australia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and Vietnam also imported the product.

Botulism can be fatal, with symptoms typically beginning within 36 hours of consuming contaminated food. The infection can result in paralysis and respiratory failure, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

In the 2008 scandal, milk powder was contaminated with melamine, a chemical commonly used in laminates, wood adhesives and flame retardants that can be used to mimic high-protein additives. Chinese authorities arrested more than 18 people and executed two in the contamination scandal, which saw thousands sickened in addition to the infant deaths.

The company involved, Sanlu Group, was partially owned by Fonterra. Sanlu group later filed for bankruptcy.

Two years later, a Fonterra-supplied company in China faced scrutiny over claims that their milk powder led to premature sexual development in infant girls. At the time, Fonterra said it remained “100% confident about the quality of its products.”

Health News – About Sugar Cane Drinks

A friend whose father works for the government health inspection passed on his info. Their job is to inspect all hawkers, their cooked food, their store hygiene, etc. They found sugar cane juice has the highest content of bacteria among all food. In fact, it has exceeded the set limit.

Hence, these guys had to find out why. They went round all sugar cane stores and watched the way the hawkers handled their sugar cane, wash their glasses, their entire procedure. But they couldn’t find the problem.

One day, they stayed till closing time and discovered some shocking facts! Whenever, the hawkers closed their stores, they would wash the floor with detergent.. As we know, the remaining sugar canes will be placed at the back of the store, vertically standing and as sugar canes are very porous, they tend to absorb whatever liquid around them. Besides the soapy water, the dirt on hawkers’ boots, cats’ urine, etc, will all be absorbed?? Now, whenever I eat at a hawker centre, I would warn all my friends about this and of course I stopped drinking my favorite sugar cane juice.

A friend, who loved sugar cane juice, was pregnant. She was always drinking sugar cane juice. Anyway, one day she miscarried and the fetus was already like 6 or 7 months old, I think. When the doctors did an autopsy to find out why all of a sudden the fetus had died inside her, they found traces of some chemical substance, which was found in cat urine. Large traces of it.

While it would not be able to harm adults, it was extremely toxic to babies, what more a fetus? So they tried to determine how this cat urine thing could have ended up in the fetus. This meant that it had to be digested by the mother, right? And the only logical conclusion they could come up with was that since these sugar cane juice stall holders just leave the canes lying around on the wet and dirty floor, it would not be impossible to think that stray cats could have peed on those sugar canes or near those sugar canes. So think carefully the next time you order that favorite sugar cane juice!

 The former associate professor of ecology at Universiti Malaya(Malaysia), Dr Palaniappan has authored several books on complementary therapy called, ‘Ecological Healing System’.

Dr Palaniappan said his 33 years of research had shown that high acidity in the body resulted in loss of immunity, thus making people more susceptible to viral diseases like Influenza A (H1N1).

Hence, to prevent acidity, it was essential to consume alkaline food and drinks that could neutralise excess acid in the body. Dr Palaniappan recommends coconut water, which is alkaline, and therefore could be used as a herbal medicine for the prevention of H1N1.

For example, he said, those who felt feverish and developed a burning sensation while attending to a call of nature because of extreme acidity, could neutralise it by drinking coconut water, twice a day, for three days. He also recommended orange, lemon and pomelo which, despite containing citric acid, were very rich in potassium and therefore, would not disturb the body’s immunity.

According to Dr Palaniappan, excessive physical activity like running a marathon should be avoided as it produced acid due to excessive metabolic activity. Similarly, he said, keeping late nights without adequate sleep and working without proper rest could also increase the body’s acidity which in turn, lowered immunity and made the body vulnerable to viral attacks.
